Introduction

His Path to Success in Trade
1. Relying on Himself
When he migrated from Makkah to Madinah (622 CE / 1 AH), he left behind all his wealth, becoming a poor man with nothing. The Prophet ﷺ paired him in brotherhood with Sa’d ibn al-Rabi, who generously offered him half of his wealth.
But Abdur-Rahman replied:
“May Allah bless your wealth and family. Just show me the way to the marketplace.”
Lesson: Don’t depend on others; take the initiative yourself.
2. Starting Small
He began selling simple items in the marketplace of Banu Qaynuqa’ — such as dried yogurt (aqt), butter, and ghee.
His profits were small, but consistent.

Abdur-Rahman was known for his honesty. He never cheated, exaggerated prices, or engaged in dishonest trade.
Because of this, people trusted him and preferred buying from him.

5. Dua (Supplication) and Istighfar (Seeking Forgiveness)
Abdur-Rahman frequently prayed for barakah (blessing) in his trade and constantly sought Allah’s forgiveness.
The Prophet ﷺ said:
“Whoever regularly seeks forgiveness, Allah will provide him a way out of every distress, a relief from every anxiety, and provide for him from where he does not expect.”
Lesson: Dua and istighfar open doors of sustenance.
6. Charity and Generosity
Even when his wealth was still growing, he never stopped giving charity.
In the Battle of Tabuk, he donated 200 ounces of gold — a huge amount at the time.
Lesson: Charity never decreases wealth; it multiplies it.
7. Expansion and Development
After succeeding with basic goods, he expanded into textiles, perfumes, and later into trading camels and horses.
This diversification made him one of the wealthiest men in Madinah.
