The Journey of Abraham in Search of the Divine Light  A Reflection from Surah Al-An'am

The Night Sky and the First Sign

It begins in the stillness of the night. Abraham gazes into the vast expanse of the sky. The stars glitter above him, each one a symbol of mystery and beauty. As the Qur’an counts:

“When the night covered him over, he saw a star. He said: This is my Lord. But when it was set, he said: I love not those that set.”

This was not doubt, nor confusion — it was a reflection. Abraham, raised among idol-worshippers, questions the logic of worship what fades away. His heart seeks a Lord who never disappears.

The Moon, the Sun, and the Awakening of Certainty

As the night deepens, the moon rises in majestic brightness. Abraham observes its glow and says:

“This is my Lord.”

But when the moon sets, he realizes again: “If my Lord does not guide me, I shall surely be among those who go astray.”

At dawn, the sun ascends — brilliant, mighty, overwhelming in its light. For a moment, it seems like the greatest power of all. Yet as the day wanes and the sun descends beyond the horizon, Abraham’s heart finds the truth his soul has long known.

“O my people! I am indeed free from all that you associate with Allah. I have turned my face toward Him who created the heavens and the earth, pure in faith, and I am not of those who ascribe partners to Him.”

True Guidance Comes from God Alone: ​​Abraham’s realization — “If my Lord does not guide me...” — reveals the humility of the seeker.

Rejecting False Gods: The stars, moon, and sun symbolize worldly illusions — power, fame, and wealth — that fade away, while God remains eternal.
